How do I know I need help?

Honest signs include chasing losses, lying to friends or family about how much you play, borrowing money to fund gambling, feeling anxious or low when you are not playing, neglecting work or family commitments, and being unable to walk away from a session when you planned to. None of these alone proves a problem, but if more than one feels familiar it is worth a conversation. Talking does not commit you to anything. It is just a starting point.

What happens when I call GamCare?

You will speak to a trained adviser who will listen, ask a few questions about what is going on and then talk you through the options. There is no script and no judgement. You can stay anonymous if you prefer. The adviser can refer you to a local counsellor, a residential programme or a peer support group, all free of charge. The helpline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 0808 8020 133.

What practical steps can I take right now?

Set a deposit limit on every gambling account you hold. Block gambling sites at the browser level using Gamban or GamBlock. Sign up to GamStop to self-exclude from every UKGC-licensed site for six months, one year or five years. Ask your bank to add a gambling block to your debit and credit cards, which is a free feature on every major UK bank. Tell one person you trust what is going on. That last step matters more than any of the others.

What if I am worried about somebody else?

The GamCare helpline supports family members and friends as well as players. They can advise on how to start a conversation, what to expect and how to look after your own wellbeing while you support someone else. Gordon Moody also offers specific support for affected family members. You are not on your own with this.
